DIY Fleece Area Rugs

I looked for for the longest time for a rug that I liked for our living room, but never really found one that I loved.  So I decided to make one.  And while I love the way this one and the others turned out, it is not a project for those who like get things done quickly!  I didn’t time myself on the big rugs, but the small pink one for my bathroom took 5 hours, so you can imagine how long the big ones took.
I took strips of fleece and attached them to a latch hook thingy (don’t know the official name for it!).  I would take the rug everywhere with me including the dirt track races and sit in a chair and put attach piece after piece.  They were all labors of love but I couldn’t be happier with the way they turned out!  They are feel wonderful on your feet and add warmth to the room.

Here are some pictures of in process of making the small pink one.  The strips are 1″ wide by 4″ long.  I didn’t tie them in knots, just slipped them through the grid.

Holy cow those came out great! Though I do like quick and easy, these came out so well that the effort is worth it! I think I need to make a few of these because my feet would love their pretty softness PLUS I can make them in exactly the colors I want. Thanks for posting! I’m Pinning and following you now.

Thank you so much for your kind words! They are super soft and that is exactly why I made them so I could pick the colors! I actually had other color circles in my old house and when we moved I just changed the colors out to match my new decor. Thanks for visiting!

Thank you! I’ll see if I can find some in progress pictures I made the big one before blogging was even on my mind so I didn’t take any pictures, but I think I have some of making the small one which is the same process.

I’d love to see some in progress too– or maybe a picture of what a latch hook thingy is? 🙂 I can not find a rug I like or can afford for my living room and this seems like a great option! 🙂 Thank you.

Awesome work!! I’ve been wanting to make one w/ Tshirt strips because I assumed flannel or fleece would “grip” fuzz and everything else so much it’d always look dirty. Can you tell me if that is a prob. with your rugs and how you clean them? Are they vacuumable? Also, did you skip holes in the latch hook grid canvas when you were putting the strips in? Thanks so much! Really great job and I LOVE your colors!

Thank you! The fleece doesn’t grip too much fuzz but it does produce a lot of fuzz at first! I was dusting up fuzz for quite awhile after I first made it. I do vacuum them with the brush turned off, I have a Dyson. I also just shake them outside and everyone once in awhile I will hang them on the close line and spray them off. I tried washing a small one in the washing machine and it fell apart, which could be because I didn’t tie the strips in knots, they are just slipped through the grid. I didn’t like the feel of the knots, but tying them may help with it holding up better. I also just use a jumbo sized lint roller too (I am kind of a clean freak). I did skip holes on the canvas, I didn’t do any certain pattern just very random. I will post a picture of the bottom side of it so you can see it. Sorry for the long response, thank you so much for visiting! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

This is so cute! I love it! 🙂 Did you just put the strips through the hook and tie a knot? And how big of strips? Thanks!
